How to Build a Concrete Patio
Concrete is a great choice for a patio because it’s sturdy and lasts 30 years or more as long as it’s properly cared for. It’s also more durable than wood or pavers because it won’t sink unevenly or crack due to heavy foot traffic or pets.
A concrete patio is a great way to add a splash of color and texture to your home’s exterior. It can be painted, stenciled or stained to mimic more expensive patio materials like pavers or stone.
If you’re building your own concrete patio, make sure you have all the equipment you need to complete the job correctly and safely. A few tools you’ll need include a shovel, a wheelbarrow, a mortar tub and a mixer. Mixing by hand is best, and you should wear gloves and eye protection when mixing.
You’ll need a form to hold the concrete in place. A square shovel or a mortar hoe works well for spreading the concrete. The key is not to overwork it or drag it, which can cause the aggregate to settle at the bottom and make your DIY patio look messy.
Before pouring concrete, you’ll want to lay down a 4″-6″ bed of gravel as a base for your slab. Gravel helps keep the concrete from getting muddy or flooded by rain, and it provides a level foundation for plants to grow on.
The amount of gravel needed will depend on the area’s climate and drainage. If the site has poor drainage, you’ll need a thicker base than if it has good water flow.
To set the foundation for your concrete patio, mark the corners of the patio site with guide strings. Drive stakes about 1 foot beyond each edge, then tie mason’s lines between the stakes. Then, use a 48-in. level or laser level to raise the entire perimeter of each stake to the height of the patio you’re building.
Once you’ve marked the edges, install the forms. To help keep the concrete from shifting, cut shallow grooves in the wet cement pad called control joints, which will weaken the spots a little so that if the ground shifts, the patio will crack along the control joint.
If you’re planning to make a large patio, consider putting in concrete reinforcing fibers. They make a patio stronger and more resistant to cracks, which is especially important when you’re pouring concrete over a slope.
You can also add small stones to the concrete, or even pebbles, to create a more natural look and feel. However, you’ll need to make sure that your concrete is strong enough for the weight of the stones and will not crumble over time.
The shape of the aggregate should be smooth to give a better finished surface and to avoid jagged edges. You’ll also need a high-pressure cement mixture and a good mixer to get the right consistency.
A concrete patio is a great way to extend your home’s outdoor living space and provide an easy way to access it from the house. It also comes in a wide range of colors, so you can choose the one that matches your house and landscaping best. It’s also a relatively inexpensive material to build, so it’s an ideal option for homeowners on a budget.
